This jiari shakuhachi is made from 12-15 years old Japanese madake bamboo. I feel it has a powerful sound, and can take a lot of air. The ro is strong, round and rich with harmonics. Overall the shakuhachi has an interesting tone colour, great response and balance throughout the octaves. Both, otsu and kan register are easy accessible and the shakuhachi is also capable of the full dai-kan range, playing up to ro in the 4. octave.
There are traditional rattan bindings on the middle joint and the bore is finished with black urushi lacquer. The bamboo is quite thickwalled, giving the flute its distinctive sound, and has the traditional root end. The bamboo is comfortable shaped and at 428 g the flute is medium weight and comfortable to hold and play.
This shakuhachi can be used for various styles and genres e.g. honkyoku, sankyoku or modern music. The shakuhachi comes with a bag. (see image)
