jinashi shakuhachi
From time to time I have bamboo pieces which I feel are more suitable to make a jinashi shakuhachi and these flutes I will offer below.
Jinashi shakuhachi are usually tuned to themselves, meaning the given length in combination with the bore diameter gives the fundamental pitch (‘ro‘), which lies rarely on an exact ‘western’ reference pitch, but rather +/- 10 – 50 cents up or down. Starting from this pitch the holes are placed to achieve the usual pentatonic shakuhachi scale intervals. Please see the individual descriptions for more information on each flute.
Ji-nashi shakuhachi meaning literally ‘without ji‘ have sometimes, depending on how strict the terminology is interpreted by the maker, some small amount of ‘ji‘ or other ‘spot-tuning’ material added. Some people may refer to shakuhachi with small amount added material to their bore as ji-mori shakuhachi. This is of course all in contrast to ji-ari shakuhachi where the inside bore is meticulously fine shaped to produce a tonal colour rich, balanced, responsive and pitch correct versaltile instrument.
The jinashi shakuhachi below are ‘true’ jinashi (if not otherwise noted in their descriptions) and were only worked on by substracting material from the inside of the bore. The ‘natural’ bamboo bore produces more “quiet” tonal colours and is preferred by some players when playing the traditional honkyoku repertoire.
