This shakuhachi has a deep beautiful dark-ish tone. It has a quick response and plays very easily through the octaves with wide range of tonal colours and dynamic possibilities. The expansive sound and tone colouring make this great for honkyoku, but also a great flute to improvise with. The natural inside dimension of the bamboo were pretty ideal and only required a small amount of ‘ji’ to be added. It still feels light to hold at 475 gram and the ergonomically placed finger holes give it a comfortable grip.

Visually the shakuhachi has a rather special looking appearance with a mixture of ‘soma’ sesame pattern and darkish patches to the surface. The middle joint with steel rings and rattan bindings compliment and emphasise this. There are a couple of small surface hairline cracks near the root end which sometimes occur during the harvest of the bamboo culm, this is usually of no concern and has been unchanged since I got that piece about two years ago – nevertheless I added a preventive binding to secure it. This of course has no bearing on the playability of the instrument.

The shakuhachi can be used for various styles and genres, probably particular suitable for honkyoku music. It comes with a protective utaguchi cap and a carrying bag. (see pictures)
